Foreign brands expect few constraints from China's tobacco-advertising ban

Article Abstract:

China's ban on cigarette advertising due for implementation in Feb. 1995 has not discouraged international tobacco companies. Such firms as Philip Morris and UK's B.A.T. Industries PLC will be able to sell their merchandise through the sponsorship of events such as sports and educational activities and broadcasts which do not fall under the new law. Nevertheless, China's law requires these companies to inform the public of the dangers of cigarette smoking via health warnings on their products.

Japan Tobacco is grinning; foreigners may be butt of cigarette-ad curbs

Article Abstract:

Japan Tobacco Inc is expected to benefit from the new advertising regulation approved by the government but the market share and overall sales of foreign tobacco companies may be greatly affected. The new policy places a full advertising ban on tobacco and cigarette products in the government's move to regulate underage smoking, which has become rampant. The ban covers advertising on television, movies, radio and the Internet.

Tobacco firms cite ruling to fight ad bill in Colony

Article Abstract:

The Tobacco Institute of Hong Kong has launched an aggressive public relations campaign against a proposal to ban all cigarette advertising in the colony. The group claims that the proposed law is violative of the Hong Kong Bill of Rights as it infringes on the right to free expression. It has also cited a Canadian Supreme Court ruling which overturned a similar measure.
