From zoo cage to modern ark

Article Abstract:

There have been changes in the role of zoos which have developed greater respect for the welfare of animals they house, and which have taken on the role of custodians of genetic diversity. Zoos collaborate with each other and carry out research. Fewer species are kept in each zoo, but those that remain enjoy better conditions. Animal behaviorists give ideas to keep the animals alert. Nutrition has improved, and keepers are more highly skilled. Corporate donations have become an important source of finance, as well as zoo shops.
