Fuel cells meet big business

Article Abstract:

Fuel cells are seen as a way of powering automobiles and of generating electricity, according to Shell Hydrogen's Don Huberts. Big business is interested in this technology, which is no longer the preserve of academics. Iceland is seeking to use hydrogen for its fishing fleet as well as for cars. Prototypes have been developed by car manufacturers who have been stimulated by politicians' efforts to reduce emissions. Fuel cells have become cheaper, and their development should be helped by deregulation of the energy industry.

Stepping on the gas

Article Abstract:

Hydrogen can be safe as a fuel, and has environmental benefits, though the storage and transportation technology needs further research. Government policy tends to promote usage of fossil fuels instead of fuel cells, and this could be changed. Coal is subsidized in some parts of Europe, and gasoline is very cheap in the US. The energy industry should be deregulated, and governments could help is tackling issues related to common standards and health and safety, to help promote hydrogen energy.
