GE's net rose 13% in quarter to record total

Article Abstract:

General Electric Co. (GE) posted a 13% increase in net income to a record $2.45 billion for the second quarter of 1998. The company, which earned $2.16 billion the same quarter in 1997, saw its earings per share climbed by 14% to 74 cents a share on a diluted basis from 65 cents a year earlier. Its 18% operating margin on sales, up by 17% a year earlier, is the highest in GE's history. The performance appears driven by the company's emphasis on high-margin services and the Six Sigma program, which is geared to slash costs and improve products.
