GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY

Article Abstract:

Indonesian rice importers have been forced to approach India for their rice requirements. Indonesia had banned imports of non- basmati rice from India due to poor quality. Vietnam and Thailand have decided to discontinue rice exports to Indonesia due to the financial crisis in Indonesia. The prices of non-basmati rice has increased by $5 to $6 per tonne for the 10 to 25 percent broken rice varieties, due to the increased demand. Indian rice exporters have revised their estimates of rice export to Indonesia for 1998-99 from 1.4-1.5 million tonnes to 2 to 2.4 million tonnes. (gs)
