Gains abroad help avert steep fall in Barlow's net profit for fiscal year

Article Abstract:

Barlow Ltd. of South Africa has cited growing international operations in averting a much steeper decline in reporting a lower net profit of $118.1 million for the year ended September 30, 1998. The heavy-industries holding company saw its sales increase by 5.9% to 20.54 billion rand, while pretax profit declined by 13% to 1.07 billion. Barlow' 57% of profit was raised from offshore interests, mainly attributed to continued buoyant economic activity in Europe and the US and a a downturn in key industries in South Africa.
