Going for Coke

Article Abstract:

Coca-Cola has been investigated by competition authorities in Italy, who have prepared an unpublished report which examines discounts offered to wholesalers that do not stock Pepsi, among other issues. Coke sales have increased in Italy, while Pepsi sales have dropped, so the discounting appears to have been successful. Coke accounts for 80% of Italy's cola market and can bypass wholesalers that do not cooperate since it has a strong distribution network. Coke argues that it is not dominant and claims that water and milk represent competition to Coke sales.

The market is dominated by Pepsi-Cola, Coca-Cola and Seven Up/Dr Pepper, which account for 89% of soda sales.
