Hoping for a gusher

Article Abstract:

Kazakhstan has large petroleum reserves but has problems in extracting and transporting petroleum. The Offshore Kazakhstan International Operating Company (OKIOC) has started drilling in the Caspian Sea, and success could lead to renewed interest in building a pipeline that is indepedent of Russia. The Caspian Pipeline Consortium plans a pipeline through Russia. Construction costs have deterred investment in a pipeline through China. There is also concern about the environmental impact of a petroleum accident on the Caspian Sea, though OKIOC argues that techniques used in the Gulf of Mexico can be safely used in the Caspian Sea.

Why big is still beautiful

Article Abstract:

Low petroleum prices were seen to have triggered the BP Amoco merger, and prices have since risen, while BP Amoco plans a merger with Atlantic Richfield. The combined group would be the biggest publicly quoted petroleum concern world wide in terms of reserves and output, though Exxon-and-Mobil ranks higher in terms of market capitalization. Mergers are seen to offer major savings in the petroleum industry, as well as allowing for a more adventurous exploration and production policy.
