Gone, at last: President Suharto leaves a dangerous legacy to his successor

Article Abstract:

The May 1998 resignation of Indonesia Pres Suharto after 32 years in power will prove beneficial to the country, but changes will not happen overnight. VP, now Pres, Habibie is not a favorite of students or bankers because of his policies. A more democratic government is needed.

The military has traditionally had a strong role in Indonesian politics, though generals now accept the notion that that role needs to be diminished. Those in power also believe however that a strong domestic military presence is needed to keep the archipelago nation united.

Indonesia's new president on a tide of troubles

Article Abstract:

Habibie is a crony handpicked to succeed resigning Pres Suharto and seems unlikely to bring about the total reform demanded by Indonesians. Nonetheless, Habibie has no choice but to give in to widespread pressures and has initially promised several reforms.
