Goodbye, Partner

Article Abstract:

Indian computer conglomerate HCL and HP ended their six-year joint venture in Aug 1997. The split was amicable, with HCL buying back HP's 26% stake and retaining some HP distribution rights. The collaboration was valuable to both parties, with HCL importing HP technology at a time when high import duties encouraged domestic computer manufacture, and HP gaining access to a potentially vast market. However, with lowered import duties, a slowdown in the Indian economy, increasing competition, and some management difficulties, the companies no longer benefited from the venture.
