Article Abstract:

Competition is likely to be permitted in registering Internet addresses and AIL looks set to enter the market. There will still be disputes about what is charges and the powers relating to domain names. The Internet has a hierarchical address system and control of root servers gives major control over the Internet. Domain names were originally the province of scientists, and Network Solutions charged for registering names when the Internet subsidy was withdrawn by the US government.
