New rules for an old debate

Article Abstract:

Plans by the UK government to raise the company audit threshold from 350,000 pounds sterling turnover to 1 million pounds sterling turnover during 2000 could result in more director fraud, less accountability and the closure of many small firms, according to accounting organisations. The government hopes the new audit threshold will free up valuable time and money, providing more opportunity for small firms to invest in a profitable future.

Great idea, but can you afford it?

Article Abstract:

The UK Treasury and the Dept of Trade and Industry have jointly commissioned a consultation exercise to seek the views of small and medium-sized companies about how research and development and start-up funding can be made more widely available. This approach indicates that the Treasury may introduce fiscal measures to overcome the problems experienced by small companies in obtaining funding through conventional channels, such as banks. Issues to be discussed will include the possibility of using a tax credit against the cost of research and development spending to encourage small and medium-sized companies.

Learning from a top dog

Article Abstract:

There have been very few examples of corporate venturing, where one company creates links with another for a project, or even takes an equity stake, among small and medium-sized companies in the UK so far. Indeed, there is almost no equity investment at all by large companies in small independent concerns, according to the Tech Stars 1997 report from the Confederation of British Industry. A number of research projects are seeking to establish why corporate venturing has so far proved much less popular in the UK than in the US.
