Hands across the ocean

Article Abstract:

Newly elected Australian prime minister Paul Keating now facesthe challenge of continuing the successful links with Asia that his predecessors have established. This cooperation with its Asian neighbors have come too late because of Australia's tendency to lean towards the west. Today, the country holds joint military exercises with six Asian countries and plans to cut the tariff on imported Asian goods. These enhanced relations may prove to be beneficial for Australia and the rest of Asia.

Paul primes the pump

Article Abstract:

Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating contends that his economic reform proposals would pump-prime the economy and generate 800,000 new jobs without increasing taxes. His economic development package is centered around the infusion of A$2.3 billion into capital works. However, his critics argue that Keating, an almost fanatical advocate of free trade policies, is merely engaging in electioneering.
