BT dismisses bid for its copper and fiber network

PaineWebber may be sold to Dresdner

Article Abstract:

Dresdner Bank AG of Germany is in preliminary negotiations to purchase PaineWebber Group Inc., which is the fourth-biggest brokerage company in the US, for up to $10 billion. PaineWebber would make Dresdner to have immediate access to US individual investors through the former's network of 6,600 brokers across the US. To Dresdner, the largest asset of PaineWebber would be its vast distribution network in the US. This network could be utilized by Dresdner to market stocks and bonds. PaineWebber's another appeal would be its Mitchell Hutchins Asset Management subsidiary, which handles assets worth $54.7 billion.
