Japan retailer tops Barneys bid

Article Abstract:

Japan's biggest mass-market apparel retailer Fast Retailing Co. has made a $900 mil offer to buy Barneys New York Inc., a 9% premium to an earlier agreement to sell Barneys to Istithmar, a Dubai government investment unit, for $825 mil. If the sale to Istithmar does not go through, Barneys parent Jones Apparel Group Inc. will face a termination fee exceeding $20 mil.

Hennes & Mauritz AB's plans lift shares

Hennes & Mauritz AB saw its share value rise by 10% after the company outlined a major expansion strategy. Hennes & Mauritz also posted strong growth in its profits for the three-month period that ended on February 28, 1999. The company's share value increase was based on an accelerated store expansion strategy and on plans to expand into markets in the US and Spain.
