Water peril: Indonesia's urbanization may precipitate water crisis

Article Abstract:

Indonesian water authorities expect the current strain on their system to become a full-blown crisis by 2015, while the greater Jakarta area grows from 16 million to 30 million. In the same time Java's population will swell from 107 million to 130 million. Unfortunately, most of the island's rainfall is in the south, while population is concentrated in the north, further straining resources. Pumping has increased salinization of the groundwater and made land subside. Cheaper water-line connections are needed.
