Stoking the furnace: battle lines drawn as Tajikistan spirals into civil war

Article Abstract:

Possibile peace in Tajikistan haa been undermined by conflicts intermittently erupting between former communists and Islamic fundamentalists. Communist groups struggle to reinstate Rakhmon Nabiyev as president, while Islamic groups supported by Iran want to reinforce their position as a strong opposition to Pres Akbararsho Iskandarov's interim government. The government's tenuous hold on the nation is already threatened by the oppostiion which anticipates a possible split in the Islamic coalition forming the backbone of the interim government.

Ashes to ashes

Article Abstract:

Afghanistan desperately needs foreign aid to clear mines and repair the shattered infrastructure, but little will arrive until the country can achieve peace. The city of Kabul has no water, sewage disposal, electricity, or telephones, and refugees are returning by the thousands. UN teams hope to clear some of the 240 minefields covering 22 sq km there, a bare start on the 10 million mines planted in the country, with more being laid daily. Afghan leaders claim foreign aid is their right for stopping communism.
