Routing and buffer allocation models for a telecommunication system with heterogeneous devices

Article Abstract:

An efficient design aproach is proposed for optimizing the allocation of storage buffers in a set of heterogeneous devices in a branching network architecture. Various optimization models with a common set of basic operational and cost assumptions are used. Since the proposed method has already been tested in a previous paper, no numerical results are provided. However, the optimization method can also be extended to assess the performance of telecommunications systems with finite-capacity buffers.

Design and operation of an order-consolidation warehouse: models and application

Article Abstract:

A comprehensive hierarchical decision model is developed for the design and operation of order consolidation warehouses. The model is based on mathematicaloptimization models and can be used to solve complex problems involving warehouse layout, equipment and technology selection, item location, zoning, picker assignment, pick-list generation and order batching. Applications of themodel and empirical analyses of the results in a case example show the cost effectiveness of the model.

Multi-item batching heuristics for minimization of queueing delays

Article Abstract:

A single-facility multi-item model relates batching to queueing delays in complex manufacturing facilities. The heuristic batching rules developed are found effective in controlling queueing behavior through batching policies. The relationship of batch size to setup times and utilization are modelled using an M/G/1 queue. While resulting lower bounds are unreliable, the upper bounds are near optimal and useful in developing batching heuristics in closed form.
