Telecommunications companies Vodaphone Group PLC, NTT DoCoMo Inc., Singapore Telecommunications Ltd., Hutchison Whampoa Ltd., and Regional Wireless Co. are all seeking expansion in Asia. The upcoming third-generation-services overhaul and relaxed industry regulations may lead to increased partnerships as companies vie for subscribers across Asia. Each company's management styles and priorities are profiled, including present number of Asian-Pacific markets and weighted subscribers.

Article Abstract:

The Asian cellular telephone industry is on the brink of negotiating several consolidation deals in response to the emergence of third-generation network technology, a sector in which carriers will need a greater share of the market to succeed. Although companies including British Telecom and Cable and Wireless PLC are considering selling their Asian mobile telecommunications assets, uncertain economic conditions may present problems for potential acquisitions and alliances.

The satellite industry is planning to try broadband Internet access to regain the confidence of the telecommunications industry. The new multibeam-based satellite broadband technology is expected to be less expensive than current technology, have more powerful and faster online connections and two way data transmission, and should be available around 2004.
