Home production, market production and the changing allocation of consumption expenditure on services

Article Abstract:

A thoeretical model of the consumption demand for services is presented. The model is unique from other models because it makes use of data on male and female labor force participation rates and working hours in the US from 1949 to 1985. Estimates provided by the model show that demand for market services increases as female labor force participation rises and decreases when male labor force participation falls. The findings indicate that growth in the demand for services will not be as strong as in the past years.
