The 1992 Venice International Film Festival had political overtones to it, as complaints were openly voiced over the American dominance of the industry. European companies have a hard time competing but often borrow heavily from American influences.

Few recent books extolling the economic growth of Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia predicted any difficulties, much less a major crash like the 1997-98 debacle. Two exceptions were Jim Rohwer's 'Asia Rising' and 'Troubled Tiger' by Mark Clifford.

Venice Film Festival director Felice Laudadio tried to put more emphasis on quality films this year, rather than overhyped Hollywood blockbusters. Films that won awards included 'Liar,' 'Nettoyage a sec,' 'Ovosodo,' and 'Hana-Bi.'
