Hong Kong-listed retail shares still offer some bargains

Article Abstract:

Market analysts maintain that the Hong Kong-listed Chinese retail industry still is a good place to invest as there are some stocks left that can be considered good bargains. Analysts predict that the reduction of austerity measures have driven growth rates down in mainland China during 1996 that could be offset by a boom in consumption in 1997. Analysts warn, however, that cheap stocks are not necessarily bargains as some companies remain poor performers.

Taking a more timid stance: Hong Kong directors cut own-share buybacks

Article Abstract:

Company directors in Hong Kong have expressed apprehension over share buybacks, as stocks grapple with declining rates in financial markets. Statistics revealed that directors bought as much as HK$3.6 billion from Oct and Nov of 1997, when the Hang Seng Index dropped beyond 1000 points. Since then, the number of directors participating in buybacks significantly declined. Experts believe that such measures are aimed at lowering one's exposure to risk.
