Hong Kong may be losing competitive edge to Singapore

Article Abstract:

Singapore may be overtaking Hong Kong in terms of competitiveness. The finding is the result of a survey conducted by management consultants Watson Wyatt Worldwide on how innovation and creativity in the corporate setting can be turned into an advantage. Among the policies implemented by Singapore that are expected to help it attract and keep top-class firms are reducing the cost of electric power, encouraging the hiring of foreign talents, easing Internet restrictions and supporting its wide utilization by the local population.

Australia's competitive edge.: economy makes strides and ranks high on many international measures

Article Abstract:

Australia's competitiveness in the global economy has been increasing with every passing year, mainly due to the political will of the Australian government in boosting productivity. The government is also decreasing its operational budget by reducing its subsidies on state-owned enterprises or privatizing many of these state-owned businesses. Australia has also weaned its economy off agriculture and natural resources, with manufacturing and the service sector accounting for a significant portion of Australia's export.

Papua New Guinea hopes for added growth in '97

Article Abstract:

Papua New Guinea finance minister Chris Haiveta is confident about his country's prospects for economic growth. Haiveta stated that Papua New Guinea will enjoy growth of at least 2% to 3% in 1996 and this is expected to improve even further in 1997. The government has taken aggressive efforts to stimulate the economy, balance the national budget and boost foreign exchange reserves.
