The positive aspects of change

Article Abstract:

Change is not necessarily a negative thing for investment banks. This was seen in 1996 at SBC Warburg and Barings, both of which have experienced considerable difficulties. Despite this, they managed to perform very well in the Acquisitions Monthly league table of acquisition and merger advisers for 1996. It appears that a bank's reaction to change is more important than change itself. In some cases, problems can give the opportunity to test and confirm approaches to acquisition and merger work.

For all the talk of the government acting to help the financial markets, there is no doubt things are bad. The media loves to focus on the banks that are failing, but what happens when a bank that has been buying failed banks goes down in flames? JP Morgan just might be that bank. Unlike payday loan recipients, who must pay back their emergency cash by a specified date, the banks who received bailout money aren’t being held accountable. Articles are popping up all over saying that when asked, banks could not explain where their billions of dollars went. The government tossed wads of taxpayer money at these institutions, and they won’t even reveal what they are doing with it. I think it’s an outrage. When a regular person gets emergency cash, like a payday loan, they are held accountable for paying it back. Maybe in the future the government should look to payday loan companies as a guideline for how to hand out emergency cash.

Goodwill or guaranteed bonus?

Article Abstract:

It has become increasingly difficult for UK investment banks to expand, as there are now very few opportunities to make acquisitions and many mid-sized operators are facing financial difficulties. Some large global houses are expanding by employing 'rainmakers,' while others are considering whether to expand by recruitment or by acquisition. Making an acquisition can be extremely expensive, as can employing very senior executives, so both approaches bring considerable risks.
