Hong Kong: voters' motivation

Article Abstract:

Mixed views have been expressed about why there was such an unexpectedly high turnout among voters for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region elections on May 24, 1998. The Apple Daily reported that many people voted out of a sense of civic duty, while a significant minority voted in order to express their dissatisfaction with the provisional legislature. Similar conclusions were reached by the Oriental Daily. Predictions of the turnout were very inaccurate partly because those who intended to vote for the pro-China Democratic Alliance for Betterment of Hong Kong were too embarrassed to admit it.

Australians debate diversity

Article Abstract:

There are many sensitive cultural issues to be considered in immigrant societies such as Australia. Some Australians are now becoming increasingly concerned about high levels of immigration from Asian countries, while others are objecting to high levels of financial assistance going to Aboriginals. However, it is clear that affirmative action must be taken if a harmonious society is to be created, and Australia is increasingly recognizing that it cannot afford to be seen to discriminate against Asians.

Now, the focus is on Taiwan

Article Abstract:

The Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan, the main opposition party, favours Taiwan's independence, and, like the Kuomintang (KMT), it is now less radical and wants to concentrate on improving government efficiency and fighting corruption. The new Taiwan Independence Party is calling for the formation of an independent Republic of Taiwan and office bearer, Secretary-General Stephen Lee, believes that Taiwan's formal name, the Republic of China, is detrimental to the people of Taiwan.
