Hot wired wheels: Japanese firms drive towards profits with hig-tech cars

Article Abstract:

Japanese companies are expecting 'car multimedia' to be a high growth area. About 4-5% of cars in Japan have a car navigation system, and companies have realized that the presence of a screen in the car opens up new business opportunities. The Vehicle Information and Communications System (Vics) provides information on local sights and traffic conditions, and more recent services have been introduced requiring portable phones.

Article Abstract:

Global Positioning System (GPS) technology is now being used by golfers to pinpoint their position on a course. Hand held GPS receivers can cost as little as $300 and manufacturers are continually seeking new commercial applications. Car-navigation systems are becoming popular in Japan, and rapid growth is expected in the US and Europe. Other applications could include integrating GPS functions into cellular phones.

US software giant Microsoft, already dominating the software market, plans to extend its reach to onboard computers in cars. The Auto PC concept has been developed to recognize voice commands that control navigation, the stereo and Internet access. Manufacturers such as Peugeot-Citroen, Nissan and Volkswagen are interested in the concept.
