Politically incorrect: Lee Kuan Yew backs down as Malaysians protest

Le Kuan Yew, Singapore's Senior Minister's disparaging remarks about Malaysia's Johor state have caused fury in Malaysia and brought bilateral relations to a very low ebb. The minister formally retracted his remarks that Johor was notorious for shootings, muggings and car-jackings, and apologised, but it did little to ease the fury. However the remarks were said to be directed at opposition politician Tang Liang Hong who is facing defamation suits from Lee and several Singapore leaders, and fled to Johor after allegedly receiving threats.

Being neighbourly: Malaysia's Johor state finds Singapore too close for comfort

Article Abstract:

There are benefits for Johoreans living close to Singapore, with Singaporean companies being major investors in the state. Also the per capital income in Singapore is almost six times higher, and nearly 25,000 day-trippers cross into Johor spending about 203 million ringgit. However there are concerns that Singaporeans are purchasing large portions of the state and raising property prices too high. The retail boom is also said to be increasing prices.
