BERGER PAINTS - SLOW AND STEADY

Article Abstract:

The third largest paint manufacturer in India - Berger Paints Ltd (BPL) - earns around 75 percent of its revenues from the decorative paints segment. In the industrial paints segment, it caters only to the 2-wheeler sector. Raw material cost accounts for 62 percent of the sales of BPL. This is due to the high freight costs. Its major facility is located in the eastern part of India but most of its raw material suppliers are in the southern and western parts of India. In the market of southern India, BPL recently set up its third manufacturing plant in Pondicherry to improve its penetration and reduce transportation costs. BPL reduced its debt-equity ratio from 0.75:1 in 1995-96 to 0.47:1 in 1997-98. Its interest costs also have been reduced from Rs58.40 million in 1996-97 to Rs44 million in 1997-98. Its sales turnover was Rs2,998.40 crore in 1997-98. Its net profit was Rs182.57 crore. (gsh)

THIS IS JUST NOT FARE!!!

Article Abstract:

The Indian Airlines (IA) is expected to incur losses of about Rs340 million in the first half of 1998-99. It had made a profit of Rs411.5 million in 1997-98. Its cost- cutting measures have become ineffectual. It is overstaffed with an average of 416 employees per aircraft. IA has reduced it projected profits for 1998-99 by about 50 percent at Rs300-350 million. Its revenues are projected to fall due to increased air fares and a slump in corporate fliers. Among other factors, a lack of infrastructure has hindered this airline's growth. IA's 2 rivals - Jet Airways and Sahara Airlines - have just about managed to survive. The Tatas have withdrawn their proposals. (tsm)
