If it ain't broke ...

Article Abstract:

Some observers feel that some of the changes made by architectural firm Stanton Williams to the National Theatre in London, England, are not sympathetic to the original aims of Denys Lasdun, the theatre's architect. Indeed, some claim that the practice has gone against a number of the building's main goals. The siting of the bookshop in the space under the main extending terrace has obstructed the effect of a hovering slab holding a framed view of St Paul's Cathedral, and the reorganization of the entrance itself has damaged some of the basic relationships in Lasdun's concept.

Magnificent obsession

Article Abstract:

Actor, Sam Wanamaker has dreamed of rebuilding Shakespeare's Globe Theatre since he came to England in 1950. He founded the Shakespeare Globe Trust in 1970 and, with architect, Theo Crosby, has fought for the reconstruction against developers, council planners and lack of money. The plan for the site in Southwark, London, England includes an indoor theatre and housing as well as the Globe. Wanamaker sees the project as educational as well as cultural and emphasises the value of seeing Shakespearian plays performed in authentic conditions.

Seaside pavilion gets new life

Article Abstract:

The Cilffs Pavilion, Southend-on-Sea, England has been enlarged and rennovated. The original building was designed in the 1930s and built in the 60s. The rennovation reflects the style of those periods while using modern ideas and technology. The seating capacity in the multi-purpose venue has been increased and new foyers constructed as well as improvements to the acoustics and safety arrangements. A glazed wall gives spectacular sea views. However, the facilities for performers are inadequate and some seats have restricted views.
