Imperial intrigue

Article Abstract:

China is taking the opportunity presented by Southeast Asia's financial problems to develop a closer relationship with the region. Experts believe China is using economic ties to gain support on foreign policy issues, particularly in view of Chinese fears concerning the US-Japan security treaty. China has offered to lend crisis-stricken Thailand $1 billion and it has made its biggest ever overseas investment in Malaysia. Chinese Premier Li Peng made a 6-day visit to Southeast Asia in Aug 1997, during which he made comments intended to bolster growing anti-West feelings in the region.

China stirs the pot

Article Abstract:

The contract awarded by China to Colorado-based Creston Energy Corp to explore the disputed islands on the South China Sea has vexed Vietnam, one of the claimants to the islands. Vietnam has accused China of using the current disinterest among the world's powers in the multinational territorial dispute to perpetuate and solidify its position. Other claimants include the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan.
