In hopeful sign, midsize banks see demand for loans

Article Abstract:

Commercial loans, the demand for which declined following the September 11 terrorist attacks, are now showing signs of making a comeback as a source of profit for banks. In fact, 44% of loan officers polled in July 2004 said they believe demand is stronger. Meanwhile banks continue to pursue loan deals, and some such as KeyCorp. have seen their commercial loan balances rise.

In Eastern Europe, Western banks fuel growth, fears

Western banks are pushing capital influx into Eastern Europe, growing the economy and the expanding European Union. Foreign banks control 83 percent of Bulgaria's banking industry and 70 percent of Poland's banking sector.
