In the clouds: Vietnam Airlines has plenty of suitors

Article Abstract:

Vietnam Airlines could become the focus of growth among Eastern Asia's airlines. Vietnam, with its 70 million people and 2,500 kilometers of pristine coast, could make the state-owned carrier the flourishing exception to the region's recession-plagued airlines. However, the US trade embargo against Vietnam will have to end before Vietnam Airlines' promise can be realized. To date the embargo has prevented the airline from freely obtaining US-made airplanes and parts. Despite this limitation, other Asian and non-Asian airlines hope to cooperate with Vietnam Airlines.

The cookie crumbles

Article Abstract:

Rajan Pillai's packaged-foods empire has been split up by investors, leaving the Cookie King with $13 million and 29 criminal charges. The regional snack business that he built with Ross Johnson, former RJR Nabisco chairman, ran into trouble in 1990-91 as disputes between the two, and with Pillai's other backer, Groupe BSN of France, began to erupt. Questions of management style were followed by alleged financial improprieties, until BSN bought out Pillai in Jul 1993.

Inflated rock

Article Abstract:

Hongkong is no longer cheap, but it remains fascinating; 'Hongkong in Depth: An A-Z Guide' highlights its wonders while saving time, money and trouble. Chris Pomery prefers understatement to hyperbole and, rather than cliches about shopping and Suzie Wong, offers country walks. Insight Guides' 'Hong Kong' is beautiful looking but poorly written, emphasizing history and Hollywood myths at the expense of practical advice and good taste.
