India's bribery scandal reveals need for new leaders

Article Abstract:

India's Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and members of his Bharatiya Janata Party have been caught accepting bribes on video, and as a result, pressure is being placed on Vajpayee to rid his office of the corrupt officials and replace them with new leaders. The scandal has left Vajpayee with little power to implement various bold policy moves, including privatizing the economy and opening up the Indian market.

Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee's invitation of Gen. Pervez Musharraf, Pakistan's military dictator, to New Delhi for talks has been made at a politically inopportune time.
