Interbrew ends its joint venture in South America

Article Abstract:

Interbrew SA of Brazil has ended its $2-billion joint venture with Cisneros Group of Venezuela. Interbrew spokesman Jan Coucke stated that the company's main priority is to find an alternative joint venture or purchase opportunity. The planned 50-50 venture between Interbrew and Cisneros collapsed after both companies failed to agree on a transaction that would suit their individual business strategies. Interbrew and Cisneros announced in November 1997 that they would invest $2 billion in the joint venture aimed at tapping the beer market in South America.

The European Union, US, India, and Brazil, the World Trade Organization's four most influential members ended trade talks due to the inability to reach an agreement concerning farm subsidies. The US indicated a willingness to limit subsidies to $17 bil, but Brazil desired a figure below $15 bil.
