Is anyone running Russia?

Article Abstract:

Russian prime minister, Yevgeny Primakov, has performed well in terms of the political and economic situation of Russia not having deteriorated greatly since he took over in Aug 1998. He has still been relatively inactive, though has proposed a stability pact and has started a drive against corruption. He does not appear to wish to reform the economy. He may be seeking to become president. He still faces serious problems such as those relating to public finance, and he could be sacked by President Boris Yeltsin.

Yevgeny Primakov, Russia's martial artist

Article Abstract:

Russian prime minister, Yevgeny Primakov, has succeeded in obtaining foreign loans for Russia, and is calling on western countries to give way in the Balkan conflict to avoid a more serious military confrontation. Russia could force the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to make peace or raise the military stakes, and Russia could also end up as broker to a peace agreement. Primakov can gain prestige from taking on the role of champion against NATO, and he is skilled at political survival.
