Jekyll and Hyde

Article Abstract:

New Zealand has made great economic gains in the past 10 years but a new electoral system promises to end the changes and anti-foreigner sentiment is rising. The Labour Party initiated reforms in 1984, and the conservative National Party elected in 1990 extended them to social services and labor. The country now uses accrual-based accounting like most companies, and its economy grew 6% in 1994. Upcoming elections may reverse the rosy scenario as the strongest parties favor reduced debt payments and higher social spending.

Their ship comes in

Article Abstract:

New Zealand's recent America's Cup victory is both a coup and a boost for the country's world-renowned boat-building industry. Of the 1,200 companies NZ has in the business, only about 70 export aggressively, but exports now make up a third of all sales, and that figure may rise sharply. The small size of most companies makes this a cottage industry, but it has global reach and sophisticated expertise. Sailing is a hugely popular pastime in the country of 3 million, and boats are as common as cars.
