Jetting abroad ... with plenty of spending money

Article Abstract:

There has been a sharp rise in merger and acquisition activity in Germany. The number of majority takeovers with a German concern as bidder or target rose by 12.43% in 1996 from 1995, and German companies have begun undertaking large cross-border takeovers. The overall value of acquisitions made abroad rose to 17 billion pounds sterling in 1996, from 13.1 billion pounds sterling in 1995. Merger and acquisition activity has been fuelled by factors including rationalization and succession difficulties in family-owned concerns.

Care to join the party?

Article Abstract:

There were 384 buyouts in the UK in 1997, valued at 6.2 billion pounds sterling. The largest management buyout in 1997 was for Brent Walker Group's bookmaking and betting shop activities for 749 million pounds sterling. The buyout industry is suffering from a general slow-down in smaller deals, although high-financed groups are prepared to spend large sums to acquire the businesses they want. Increased complexity of deals has lead to a recruitment drive to employ highly qualified staff.

The Belgium mergers and acquisitions market is showing signs of growth in 1998, despite being hampered by cross-shareholdings.
