Jiang stands in spotlight with anti-corruption fight

Article Abstract:

Chinese Pres. Jiang Zemin is spearheading an effort to crack down on corruption within the Communist Party. The most recent spate of graft investigations have implicated several senior party leaders as well as businessmen who were once thought of as 'untouchable' by the government. Speculators noted that the new anti-corruption campaign is part of Jiang's efforts to gain the reigns of power within the party after the death of Deng Xiaoping.

China's economic reforms are being hailed by investors and legislators positive steps towards a free--market economy. Investment advisers hail Communist Party Chief Jiang Zemin's approval of the sell-off of state controlled firms. They say the move is a positive step towards the promotion of foreign investment and will bring about the formation of Chinese asset management companies that would boost the country's economic development.

Jiang touts plan to strengthen China's reforms amid troublesome economic statistics for 1994

Article Abstract:

The Chinese government will emphasize reforms in state-owned enterprises, strengthening of agriculture and checking of inflation for 1995. This was announced by China's president Jiang Zemin in a New Year's Eve speech. Data shows government's failure to control its overheated economic growth in 1994. Inflation reached 24%, more than double the targeted 10%. Price and structural reforms account for the high growth and inflation rates.
