Article Abstract:

Finland's Amer Group reported a profit of Fmk 21mn (US$ 3.8mn) in Jan-Apr 1998 (Fmk -12mn in 1-4/1997). The loss before taxes and extraordinary items amounted to Fmk 13mn (Fmk -49mn). Turnover amounted to Fmk 1,532mn (Fmk 1,477mn). The sports equipment group accounted for 90% of the turnover and Amer Tobacco for 10%. Amer employed 5,132 people at the end of April 1998. The result development was as expected. The Amer Board estimates that the result for the entire year 1998 will improve from 1997. Business risks include the poor development of Far East and Japan consumer demand and especially the costs for Atomic reorganization. The estimated turnover of 1998 amounts to Fmk 4.4bn. Wilson turnover is estimated to remain on the same level as in 1997 but profitability is expected to continue improving. Atomic companies' result is estimated to improve considerably, though remaining negative. The market position of Amer Tobacco will remain strong. The turnover of 1998 is estimated to grow and the result to remain on a good level.

Article Abstract:

The National Food Administration of Finland has issued an order that the country of origin of marinated and seasoned meat must be labeled. The objective is to harmonize meat labeling in order to avoid misleading consumers. The authorities point out that it is more important for consumers to know where the meat produced than where it was possibly processed. The regulations will come into effect at the beginning of July 1998. They apply to meat and poultry and are stricter than the EU regulations on labeling beef and beef products, scheduled for introduction simultaneously.

The former board members of Finland's Amer Group have been imposed 20 day-fines in the Helsinki district court for security market violation in connection with notifying of Amer's result in early 1996. The district court states that Amer had notified too slowly of the company result deterioration. The board members had received the information on result development already in a meeting held at the end of April 1996 but the information was published only at the beginning of June.
