Article Abstract:

The economic crisis in East Asia may have been mitigated if less foreign capital had been allowed to enter regional markets. The widespread economic collapse illustrates how unexpected difficulties can be created by free-flowing capital. Several solutions for controlling capital flows are discussed.

Going with the flows: recent turmoil in emerging markets holds important lessons for investors and economic policy-makers alike

Article Abstract:

Investments in emerging market countries should continue, despite the currency crisis in Mexico. These countries are more economically stable than in past years. The flow of foreign capital to these countries should be controlled, however, because of foreign exchange liquidity problems.

Capital punishment: should developing countries try to control short-term capital inflows?

Article Abstract:

Developing countries should not restrict short-term foreign capital inflow because this will not help economies in the long run. Restrictions do not give countries a competitive real exchange rate. The situation in Chile where such restrictions exist is examined.
