Keeping the lid on urban overheating

Article Abstract:

Localized climatic conditions, and in particular, the urban heat island phenomenon, are issues which could affect UK and European cities. A heat island occurs where air town and city air temperatures are higher than those in rural areas, and this has been linked to an increase in air-conditioned buildings and a rise in the conversion of vehicle emission gases into harmful NO2. Researchers looking into the issue, recommend the use of reflective materials as a way of reducing solar heat gains. In Japan, a concrete surface treatment utilizes rays from daylight to remove harmful NO2.

An urban idyll: Clapton Park Estate

Article Abstract:

The 9 million pounds sterling extension of the Clapton Park Estate in the borough of Hackney, London, England, was undertaken in five phases between 1993 and 1997 by Pollard Thomas and Edwards Architects. The estate now has 183 new homes, of which around 20% are flats. Most of the bricks used are buff or yellow, reflecting large amounts of light into the cul-de-sacs around which two, three and four-storey houses are located. Curved brickwork has been used to link the ends of terraces to the entrances of apartment blocks.
