Ford puts trust in Ikon

Ford India Ltd.'s Ikon is doing well in India, and its sales are higher than past sales of the Escort. According to analysts, the Ikon could be a model that the car company can use in other emerging markets, such as China.

Kia's toughened restructuring plan fails to satisfy banks: where added financing lacks, citizens help out in their own way, as gesture of national pride

Article Abstract:

The Kia Group has failed to sell its reorganization plan to financial institutions, and the company's continued survival has become a matter of national concern. The restructuring plan involves the shedding off of 5,300 employees and the merger, sale or spin-off of 23 other affiliates. The threat of bankruptcy has spurred employee loyalty and the company is being backed by Korean civic and consumer groups who call the Kia Group the "people's company."

Ford's bid for Kia spurs analysts' doubts

Article Abstract:

Financial analysts feel that Ford Motor Co's bid for Kia Motors Corp may not be a good deal for the US automobile manufacturing company. Ford with partner Mazda Motor Corp already owns a 16.9% share in Kia, and is bidding to acquire Kia and its affiliate, Asia Motors Co, against 3 Korean car manufacturers, namely, Daewoo Motor Co, Samsung Motors Inc and Hyundai Motor Co. Kia and Asia Motors have incurred losses of 4.24 tril won in the first and second quarters of 1998. Kia and Asia Motors also have outstanding debts of $9.1 bil. Moreover, Kia's labor union workers are known to be aggressive.
