Korea: a glimmer of hope

Article Abstract:

The apology by North Korea over the submarine intrusion into South Korean waters has improved the atmosphere and may even bring about an international conference to reach a peace agreement. The US has also benefited by salvaging its nuclear accord with North Korea, and North Korea will now receive badly needed food aid from South Korea and the US. Although North Korea appears to be changing its stance, it is only taking small steps, but has agreed to attend a joint US and South Korean briefing on proposals for peace talks.

Korea: one small step at a time

Article Abstract:

The US and South Korea have been able to brief North Korea about proposals for four party talks aimed at reaching a peace agreement on the Korean peninsula. The need to retain the current armistice agreement until new security arrangements can be established, was emphasised, as well as the need to reduce tension and adopt confidence building measures. The North Koreans have remained noncommittal, but it is hoped that the briefing is a move towards dialogue between North and South.

Making sense of North Korea

Article Abstract:

N Korea is seeking a peace agreement with the US. This is a shift in policy compared to 1991 when N Korea and S Korea agreed to tackle the issue of Korea between them. The collapse of communist economies since then is said to have influenced this shift in N Korea's policy. N Korea has suffered economic contraction for some years and faces a problem in ensuring food supply. There is a need for reform of the economy which the N Korean government is reluctant to carry out.
