Price drop casts shadow over Japanese chip firms

Article Abstract:

Japanese semiconductor firms enjoyed strong earnings growth in the fiscal year which ended Mar. 31, 1996, but the continued decline of memory-chip prices is a sobering thought for industry executives. LGIC's investment in a sister company irks investors; corporate South Korea is facing a hard struggle with the reform of its largest conglomerates

Article Abstract:

LG Information and Communication's (LGIC) decision to bail out its sister company, LG Semicon, has scared away investors. As a result, its stock price has plummeted by 25% in mid-Oct 1998 at the time when Korea's composite index has risen by about 13%. LGIC's moves started with the purchase of 16% of LG Semicon, followed by an infusion of 70 billion won to 80 billion won into the chip company. The deals have apparently stalled an impressive rally in LGIC shares which have dropped to 29,300 won.
