Scotty's is suffering the competition from Home Depot in the US. In 1997, the Florida-based network of 155 DIY equipment outlets posted US$ 568mn in turnover (down 6%) while the operating profit fell to US$ 13.4mn from US$ 16.1mn in 1996. In a move to concentrate in Europe, especially Belgium, France, Spain and Portugal, GIB has just sold Scotty's to a group of US investors led by two managers at Scotty's. The operation, which had been expected for long, puts an end to the presence of the Belgian distribution group in the US.
