Learning from learning: results from energy monitoring of Anglia Polytechnic University's experimental learning resource centre offer lessons for future design

Article Abstract:

Anglia Polytechnic University's Learning Resource Centre (LRC) was completed in 1994 with the help of a 40% EU Thermie grant towards capital costs of exceptional items. These included the building management system and the automatically opening triple-glazed windows. Monitoring of the building under the Thermie programme and as a DoE supported Probe programme case study noted overall energy consumption and found that the building is performing reasonably as planned in daytime stack mode, but the night cooling system is not yet working effectively. Daylighting levels were found to be good, although glare has been a major problem.

Making buildings healthier

Article Abstract:

Buildings can be very effective in concentrating pollutants, and many buildings have poor environmental performance. New research has prompted changes in attitudes to buildings and health, and designers are now being expected to assume new responsibilities. Areas which need improved understanding include air filtration, cleaning and the visual environment.
