Legal guardian: Feisty lawyer takes Vietnamese detainees under her wing

Article Abstract:

Pam Baker came to Hong Kong from Scotland in 1982 at age 50 to begin crusading for women and refugees, initially as a lawyer with the colony's Legal Aid Dept. In 1991, barred from the refugee camps as a disruptive influence, she forewent 'millions' in the civil service by quitting to work with the refugees on her own, handling divorces on the side to pay bills and living in cramped conditions. She is not sanguine about the fate of the 21,000 Vietnamese refugees remaining in Hong Kong, noting the approach of 1997.

Fear and loathing

Article Abstract:

Many people from mainland China who visit Hong Kong feel that they are treated very badly there. There has been friction between Hong Kongers and mainland Chinese for many years, and some observers fear that this will get worse after Hong Kong reverts to Chinese sovereignty. There is a danger that discrimination against mainland Chinese in Hong Kong will become a threat to social harmony there.
