Opening up architecture to the public

Article Abstract:

A report by Rory Coonan, former architecture head of the Arts Council, commissioned by the Department of National Heritage, calls for a substantial endowment fund from Lottery money, to be distributed to existing architectural institiutions to promote wider knowledge about the art. The report claims that a grandiose new building to act as a National Architecture Centre is not needed. The Tate Gallery is considering the addition of new architectural policies, and the regional architecture centres along with London based institutions such as the Architecture Foundation and the RIBA could be helped by an endowment fund.

Professional disciplinary procedure on trial

Article Abstract:

There are several options available for developing a professional disciplinary procedure for architects who are the subject of a client's complaints. Some feel RIBA should be responsible for disciplining its own members, others claim a statute should be established to give such power to the Architects Registration Council, and some believe restitution should be sought through the courts. RIBA officials are concerned the institute could become involved in costly litigation if it took over the disciplinary role. An arbitration service could be set up to address grievances.

Berlin embassy designs go through term of trial

Article Abstract:

Planning permission is soon to be sought for a new British embassy building in Berlin, Germany. This comes at a time of considerable upheaval in the planning of construction work in the city, with bitter controversy over the results of recent architectural competitions. The future of the British embassy building, designed by Michael Wilford and Partners, may well depend on plans for an adjacent site.
