Leisure centres and swimming pools

Article Abstract:

Fifty eight percent of adults in the United Kingdom visit a leisure centre at some time, with 11% going more than once weekly. Swimming is the most popular sport. Consumer spending on sport is expected to reach 3 billion pounds sterling by the year 2000, with 950 million pounds sterling spent in leisure centres in 1994 out of a total 2.23 billion pounds sterling spent on sports participation. There are 1,300 public swimming pools and about 1,400 leisure centres in the United Kingdom, with leisure centres at the core of community sports. Usage of leisure centres and swimming pools is examined.

Leisure centres and swimming pools

Article Abstract:

The UK boasts 3,265 leisure centres and swimming pools, of which most are operated by local authorities (DSOs). While the number of visitors and admission fees have risen between 1991 and 1996, the quality and diversity of facilities available at DSO sites has generally deteriorated. Some 76% of leisure centre visitors use the swimming pool, while 33% use fitness facilities. An overview of trends in leisure centers and swimming pools is given, including details of supply structure, consumer profile, advertising and forecasts for the future.
