Liberty com

Article Abstract:

Silicon Valley has tended not to notice politics, but this has changed, and the computer industry has become an important political donor. Telecoms, biotech and venture capital companies have also become major donors. The lobying strategy of the industry has not yet become coherent, but this is changing. Manuel Castells is the thinker who has provided a bridge between the computer industry and social theory. Market freedom has become linked to the idea of personal freedom. Liberal politics are benefiting from this new political awareness of the industry.

The forgotten father figure

Article Abstract:

Hermann Hollerith was a pioneer in computing, though he is less well known than Charles Babbage. Hollerith sought to tackle problems relating to data processing, in particular the processing of the US census. He developed a tabulating machine and used punched cards, as well as developing a sorting machine. His machines were superior to those of competitors in data manipulation and compilation of results. Hollerith's Tabulating Machine Company expanded abroad and became International Business Machines in 1924.
